Now, I had to get my 5-year-old daughter's expert opinion. (Yes, she loves bugs) and she says that the caterpillar you have there is of the Gypsy Moth variety. They're considered a pest, and we have them all over our back yard, but I've never seen what they eat. Trees and plants, but not sure what kind.

Congrats on your turtle nest find! How cool!

Hi, Vanessa!
Glad to have a sea turtle fan at the site today!
So...these "pest" caterpillars...I shouldn't feel bad about them dying en masse on my deck? Seriously, I swept about 60 dead caterpillar bodies off the deck Sunday and there are more out there now. It's like they're all coming here to die. Very sad.

Hey Sandy!
Nah, I wouldn't feel too bad. They're not endangered, although my daughter does have little bug funerals when she finds dead ones. LOL That's the circle of life as they say.

Vanessa,
Your daughter and I would be great friends. Kindred spirits, as Anne of Green Gables would say.

LOVE your blog. Dude, that writing contest does sound a bit scam-ish. I'm sorry to hear it. I shy away from those contests because everything I've ever heard is negative and scary. So I applaud folks who take the risk and put their writing out there. Think of the writing and editing exercise you went through getting your ms ready...that's worth something!
