Stupid Thing I Stopped Myself From Saying
Or...Yes, The Dragon was cautious and DID NOT tell the grocery cashier that she has the name of a lesbian prostitute

Ah, the holidays. Hustle and bustle and opportunities to stop in at stores you don't normally go into...

I hit a different grocery store and went through a check-out lane where a cashier named Adelaide was working. Now, to anyone else, this would be no big deal, I'm sure. But I don't believe I've ever met anyone named Adelaide...other than the lovely woman in my Choices trilogy who helps Amanda Chariss. For a split second, I almost said, "Hey! I have a character in my fantasy novels named Adelaide!" Some folks get pretty stoked when you tell them a character shares their name. Then, thank God, a switch in my brain flipped to "wait." I don't know that the elderly lady wearing her carefully applied layers of Mary Kay would have appreciated my follow-up of, "Adelaide is the lesbian prostitute who gives information to the heroine..."

So I just kept my mouth shut...for a change!

We Are Borg
Or…what’s your fave sci fi show?

I will admit to nerdish tendencies. I get irritated when I run into paranormal authors or fantasy authors who have no clue what I’m talking about when I start quoting Star Trek or Stargate or Firefly or BSG or Farscape or X-Files or whathaveyou. Heck, I’ve even watched a few episodes of Dead Like Me and chuckled. Now, I will admit that I’m not well-versed in Dr. Who, but I have friends who can fill me in on the parts that I’ve missed. :) How can fantasy or sci fi authors build and then exist in their own worlds if they don’t enjoy spending time in these other worlds? It boggles my mind. I love getting lost in these shows. And I love getting entrenched in the world I created for my Choices trilogy.

My point today is I’m part Borg for 24 hours. I went to the doctor yesterday, and, because my life is not a normal one anymore, this means they (the all-powerful and always-out-there “They”) scheduled additional doctor appointments for me. So today I went in to another clinic to get fitted with this happy little heart monitor harness. Hmm. So I’m considering at what point in the day I down a 2-liter of Jolt cola and run around the apartment complex outside really really fast to skew the results. He he he.

Of course I wouldn’t actually do that. I’m not allowed to have caffeine. But imagine how my heart would react…

Back to the original question. My Borg thoughts put me on this train. What’s your favorite sci fi show? And why? Mine have all been canceled. Well, except for BSG. It’s in its final season, though. Sigh. Stargate is supposed to have a new series starting this summer based on a premise that Samantha Carter could have solved in a two-part episode. Bummer, eh? But we’ll see how it pans out.

My favorite sci fi show is a toss-up between Stargate SG-1 with the yummy Michael Shanks (although you can’t beat that original archeologist, can you?) and Firefly with the yummy Nathan Fillion, who I got to meet at DragonCon last year. That was a good day. My reasons, beyond drooling over the yummy characters, are the humor and the writing. I’m also keen on the good explosions in Stargate SG-1. Always well done. It’s not everyday that your television shows someone blowing up a sun…or a pyramid…or a U.S. starship/battle cruiser. Good stuff.

(Your answers can be as grammatically challenged as mine, if you like. ;) )

Top 10 Things I Miss From the '80s
Or...The Dragon admits insanity now

I'll go ahead and tell you this was prompted by listening to Barry Manilow's Greatest Hits of the '80s. If you've read this blog before, you know I'm a wee bit obsessed with the musician. And if you know me, you know that I long for the days when musicians remembered the all-important saxophone solo. Oh, yes. So let's begin.

The Top 10 Things Sandy Misses From the '80s
10. Believe it or not, marching band practice makes the list -- I do believe this is where I not only heard the "no pain, no gain" and "reach down inside and give a little more" phrases, but LEARNED them; I now apply them to my life somewhat daily (jeepers)
9. Leg warmers (I know...I live in Florida...but we've been having cold fronts lately)
8. Having someone else pay all the bills (I was a teen)
7. Ronald Reagan's optimism, sense of humor, leadership, smile, attitude, etc.
6. Playing Nertz on a somewhat regular basis with the gang
5. The gang
4. Duran Duran releasing albums on a somewhat regular basis
3. Playing my violin with actual skill so that it didn't suck and frighten small children
2. Going to grandmothers' houses where there was nothing "deep" or "heavy" expected of you
1. The saxophone solo

See, many bands employed the sax solo (including Duran Duran -- Andy Hamilton, I miss you) and the lovely Barry Manilow has included it in his rendition of George Michael's Careless Whisper on his new album. Oh, man, does it sound good. It certainly takes me back. Now, of course, I have to break out the Wham and George Michael collection and breeze through that over the next week...

But the point is, those are the pieces that I used to write to. The early incarnations of Amanda Chariss and Nigel and Hrazon started their adventures and started telling the story that became the Choices trilogy that ArcheBooks is publishing for me (slowly but surely) back in the '80s when I was listening to those songs that Barry is reminding me of with his new album. It makes me want to work on the prequel this evening. :)

So while I'm typing away, why don't you all weigh in with your memories. Anything you miss from the past? Anything you wish you could have back for a day or two?

Zeal
(noun) – fervent pursuit of a goal, devotion to a cause; ardor; extreme enthusiasm for something (etymology: from Greek "zelos")

Word in a Sentence: In the Choices fantasy trilogy, Jamieson Drake pursues Hrazon and Chariss for more than sixteen years all around the continent of Onweald with a zeal often seen in obsessed quacks.

Congratulations to Harold Sander

Or...The Dragon wonders if he's slain any intruders yet

At the recent DragonCon, Harold Sander entered and won the free drawing for the replica of Jorin Taiman's sword. Join me in congratulating him on the fabulous win. (Jorin Taiman is Nigel's younger brother in the Choices trilogy.)

This was Harold's first DragonCon and he went away with great art and a great win! He was even so kind as to pose for a picture for the blog, without ever asking if my hair was real or not. Bwuahahaha. (Truth be told, no one seemed to notice it was fake! So I'll be using that little mop for the duration of my treatments! Woo-hoo!)

If you'd like to win one of these fabulous swords, you have to attend an event where I'm signing. The next one of those is in November, in sunny Naples, Florida. The Barnes & Noble at the Waterside Shops is hosting a local authors event Saturday, Nov. 15. My time slot is from 10 a.m. to noon. I hope to see you there! I know I'll have my first novel, Choices Meant for Gods, and my short story anthology, What Choices We Made, available for purchase and personalization. And if you'd like to see the second novel, Choices Meant for Kings, make its debut at this event, please help me lobby my publisher to wave the magic wand of production over the production schedule...

No matter how that goes, I'm pleased that folks like Harold stop by my table at these events and share a bit of their time talking about books (and cutlery). Congrats again to the latest winner!

Word of the Day
Breach (noun) -- a violation; an infraction; the breaking of a legal promise; a rift in a legal obligation; a gap in a structure (from Old English "brecan" meaning "to break")

Word in a Sentence: In the Choices fantasy trilogy, Odda Taiman set up a spell that protects the ships sailing into Arcana's harbors so long as his family is alive to keep the spell active, thus there is no breach in the geasa.

Your turn! This word is applicable today because Sandy can get out of her lease because the landlord is in breach of contract for a variety of not-so-good reasons. This is great because not only has the place started leaking each time it rains (thus she's convinced the mold is not just on all the surfaces she scrapes every week, but also in the walls), the air conditioner crapped out this weekend. Let us check the weather channel...oh, yay, 95 today. Woo-hoo! What fabulous sentence can you come up with to take her mind off the heat and humidity?

Exploring the Pen Name
It's Another Pseudonym Birthday Person...
(During the month of June, here at Today the Dragon Wins we explore the use of pseudonyms. Don't forget to participate in the discussion in the comment field to enter the contest for a copy of the eBook versions of Choices Meant for Gods and Apparitions. Details were posted June 1.)

Today I must pause in our guest posting to honor another birthday boy. This is the 48th birthday of John Taylor, the bass guitarist for Duran Duran. Anyone who's even heard my name must know I'm an obsessed fan. Notice the enormous cheesy grin on my face in the picture above. Yes, put me in between John Taylor and Nick Rhodes and I suddenly become "giddy with joy". That was just a month ago...and I've not quite recovered yet.

What does this have to do with our pen name discussion here at The Dragon? Why, guess what Mr. Taylor uses! Now, to be very truthful, he just uses a portion of his name, not his full birth name, so perhaps calling that a pseudonym isn't totally accurate. You decide. But I think he chose wisely given his profession.

Any Duranies out there want to weigh in on the debate? Which sounds better for a bass player rockin' out in the '80s, '90s and today: Nigel Taylor or John Taylor? Oh, yes, and everyone who has any familiarity with my fantasy trilogy just did a double-take.

Let me post the disclaimer here: Choices Meant for Gods is entirely a work of fiction. The NAMES, characters, places, and incidents depicted therein are either products of the author's imagination or are used fictitiously. Any resemblance to actual event or locales or persons, living or dead, is entirely coincidental.

Having said that, I should explain that Joshua Nigel Taiman of the Choices fantasy trilogy encompasses many characteristics of not just a celebrity rock star, but of a certain Mr. Edward Rochester of Jane Eyre fame, and of himself. Nigel is Nigel...not anyone else. If you'd like to be the judge of that, you can pick up a copy of the novel anywhere fine books are sold (you probably have to order it by now) or on Amazon. You can get the electronic version for less than $4 at my publisher's site.

But John Taylor is celebrating a birthday under his pen name today, so I'd like to use this blog to say "Happy Birthday from one of your many crazed and adoring fans!"

Word of the Day
Propagate (transitive verb) -- to transmit something through generations; to pass a characteristic from one generation to the next; to make something known; to cause an animal or plant to multiply (from Latin meaning "offspring")

Word in a Sentence: In the Choices fantasy trilogy, the force of the geasa that Sandy Lender has created does not necessarily propagate through family lines, but is a power breathed into a person at conception by the gods. Some families are more prone to handling the power for good, thus the gods allow it to propagate until a family member who cannot handle it comes along and the power appears to die out.

Your turn! Do you have any clever sentences of your own here in our world to help us define today's word?

Wish (noun) -- a desire; a longing for something; a petition for one's desire; a goal; an expression of longing (from Old English "wyscan")

Word in a Sentence: In the Choices fantasy trilogy, the old wizard Hrazon has taught Chariss the bizarre saying, "If wishes were fishes, we'd eat well for a year," which no one in their circle of friends has heard before.

Word of the Day
Phenomenal (adjective) -- remarkable; outstanding; fabulous; extraordinary; known through the senses, not the mind

Word in a Sentence: In the Choices fantasy trilogy, Nigel Taiman considers the lovely Amanda Chariss a phenomenal woman whom he'd like to marry, but she's a little busy saving the world.

Your turn! What great sentences do you have inside you today that could illustrate our vocabulary word? Any Barry fans want to give it a whirl? :)

Exploring the Pen Name

Or...using a moniker for safety

(During the month of June, here at Today the Dragon Wins we explore the use of pseudonyms. Don't forget to participate in the discussion in the comment field to enter the contest for a copy of the eBook versions of Choices Meant for Gods and Apparitions. Details were posted June 1.)

Back in high school or junior high, I read a short story about a teacher (who was really a hermit-like wizard) who lived on the outskirts of a small village. A traveler came to the village, asked a few too many questions about a wizard, and went to confront the teacher. When the teacher refused to come out of her cave-like home, the traveler warned her, "I can use your real name to control you—I know your real name." Shock and horror!

Turns out the joke was on the traveler. Using a person's true name not only forces the confrontation, it forces the person into their true form. In this case, the hermit-like wizard pretending to be a teacher popped out of her cave and assume the form of a dragon, and promptly ate the vexing traveler.

I wish I could remember the name of the story and author (and anyone who recognizes it is more than welcome to leave a comment here!) but that was at least 20 to 25 years ago. I have since read variations on that "true name" theme. I've seen the idea morphed to include mind control, slavery and instant "attraction" (if you know what I mean there).

Obviously, the concept intrigued me as a writer of fantasy fiction. I even have Hrazon and Chariss allude to it in my Choices fantasy trilogy. Chariss mentions to The Master Rothahn that she doesn't want to say his true name aloud for fear of the wind carrying it to an enemy. Now, in my mythos, the person who wishes to exert influence over you must use your true name in a spell. It's not as easy as just "speak friend and enter."

This relates to pen names rather loosely, I know, but entertained me, nonetheless. For some authors, writing under a pseudonym is synonymous with taking on an alter-ego or hiding the true name and true form from the world. (For some authors, taking on a pen name is a marketing necessity.) For those hiding in cave-like dwellings on the outskirts of small villages, I wish you much success in avoiding nosy travelers. But let me know if I can send you a nice jar of bar-b-que sauce for the few that find you.

Word in a Sentence: In the Choices fantasy trilogy, Nigel Taiman considers it his good fortune that Chariss has been brought into his life.

Word of the Day
Adorable (adjective) -- very cute; charming; lovable; the archaic version of this word means "worthy of worship," and that's the version my pet bird prefers I recognize when using the word to describe him (from Middle English "adoren" and Latin meaning "to pray to")

Word in a Sentence: In the Choices fantasy trilogy, despite Chariss's prowess as a warrior and her ability to kill grown men with a single stroke of the sword in defence of the innocent, Nigel finds her adorable and extols her merits whenever he gets the chance.

Promotion Guide
Or...where do you network?

I've spent some of my spare time the past couple of weeks (yes, I know, not much of that for us writers, is there?) signing up on free networking communities. Several of these are old hat; you've probably heard of them. But if they're new to you, then listing them here may give you an opportunity to expand your networking opportunities.

For instance, most readers and authors have probably stumbled across Shelfari by now. I've had a presence there for a while, but only recently added a host of books to my shelf and actually participated in any discussions. A friend sent me an invitation to join LinkedIn about a year ago. After staring at it then, I promptly forgot about my plan to "join up when I get a chance." A year later, another author invited me and I figured I better do it or I'd forget again...

One fabulous venue I've been affiliated with for a year now is Author Island. I know you've heard me ramble about all-day online chats there and contests that I host through the island, but I want you to understand that the island is geared toward introducing readers to new books (and new authors). The administrator, DeNita Tuttle, charges fees based on what services you'd like to take advantage of, and I like to take advantage of them ALL. Believe me, when you're as busy with life as I am, it's just NICE to have someone handing out promotional materials for you via their Web site. And when that Web site is getting in excess of 14,000 hits per day and has more than 2,000 people requesting its online newsletter, well...that's better than this blog.

The point of building this presence around the Internet is not just to promote Choices Meant for Gods, but to have the name Sandy Lender affiliated with fantasy and the entire Choices trilogy. Choices Meant for Kings may be held up by production schedule nightmares, but, one of these days, it'll hit the streets (and cybershelves). When it does, I'd like to already be on the map. You can have the same foothold for your current and upcoming masterpieces.

So here are a list of places that I've found easy to work with and free. If you're interested in joining, look me up for an instant "friend" to connect with. I'd be happy to link.

www.blogflux.com
www.gather.com
www.shelfari.com
www.goodreads.com
www.nothingbinding.com
www.redroom.com (if you tell them on the form that Sandy Lender sent you, we get entered in a contest during the month of June - fabulous!)
www.authorisland.com or e-mail DeNita for info at authorisland at yahoo dot com

Of course there are more, but this should keep you busy for a Saturday...

Finial (noun) -- an ornamentation used in architecture at the peak of an arch or at the top of an arched structure; it can also be the little "topper" or screw on a lampshade (from the Middle English "finial" meaning "final")

Word in a Sentence: In the Choices fantasy trilogy, the grand house at Arcana is carved from a mountain and boasts parapets, marble balconies, battlements and finials atop its highest arches, all demonstrating the wealth that's been handed down through the Taiman family line.

Sandy Lender Meets Duran Duran in Orlando
Or...The Dragon wonders what this hit of meeting-the-muse will do

Last time I met John Taylor, I drove back from Atlanta, sat down at the computer, and, two weeks later, had a 70,000+ word paranormal Christmas romance novel. I've played with it since then to up the word count and my publisher wants to wait to release it until the Choices fantasy trilogy is all out, but, just thinking about that writing binge makes me go...hmmm...what's gonna happen this time?

You see, I met the whole band Sunday night in Orlando before they took the stage for their Red Carpet Massacre show. (They rocked the house, by the way. My lungs still ache from all the screaming and singing along.) Jennine flew down from Kansas City to "gift" this experience for my early birthday present. I drove up to meet her in Orlando and we stood in line to get our VIP tickets. No big deal. We weren't expecting to win the randomly selected Meet-n-Greet opp. Good Lord, what are the chances? Well, turns out chances were pretty good.

So we recover from THAT news, call multiple friends to alert them that the earth is about to shift on its axis, and proceed to meet our destiny.

Let me just tell you, the members of Duran Duran operate on what we fans call "Duran Time," which is time minus half an hour or so. This means we weren't surprised to wait...and wait...and wait. It just made the eventual meet-n-greet that much more exciting. I made Jennine practice what she'd say to Simon because, well, let's just say we've been fans for a LONG time and this would prove nerve-wracking. What I found refreshing is that the folks in line around us were just as bubbly and excited as we were and didn't find it at all "odd" that we were practicing our lines. Of course, when one finds oneself in front of Simon LeBon, one does forget one's practiced lines. I nudged her. It was fine.

I spoke to John Taylor intelligently. Thanked him for the gift in our VIP package (a red leather journal) because it's the perfect gift for a writer. He actually seemed intrigued that I was a writer, for a brief flickering moment, and then the moment was over and he had to move on down the line to the next fan. Sigh. I finally got to meet Roger Taylor, who has lovely eyes and a fantastic voice.

When it came time for our photo opp, my brain snapped. Jennine zeroed in on Simon (good girl), and since I couldn't stand "within" John Taylor, I didn't know quite what to do. He and Nick were so close to each other that I didn't think I could squeeze between them politely, so I aimed for the end of the row, which would NOT be next to my idol (supreme sadness). John stopped me (supreme joy). He teased, "we don't allow any girls on the end." So he motioned me in between him and Nick (which, by the way, just in case anyone had any doubt, is a FABULOUS place to be) and I boldly wrapped my arm around his shoulders. When the fan club gets the pictures to us, I'll post it here. I'm sure I look like a start-struck moron, but, hey, I'll look deliriously happy.

I was.

So Jennine had to fly back home to K.C., where I'll see her at ConQuesT39 next weekend, actually, and I had to drive back to Naples. Sigh. We met some really neat folks in line and I hope they check in here at the blog so we don't lose touch. It was great to share the experience with you guys, and I'm glad you got to meet the band, too!

And, in case there was any doubt on this point, John was adorable. I am inspired. I think I'll write a paranormal romance novel...
Bwuahahahahaha.

Word of the Day
Swamped (adjective) -- the state of being overwhelmed with work and activities, usually to the point of nearing a nervous breakdown (make up your own etymology for this one)

Word in a Sentence: In the Choices fantasy trilogy, Chariss is totally swamped with her duties protecting Master Rothahn, helping care for little Kaylin Taiman, readying an army to march on the enemy, building a strategy for said army, planning a wedding, finding a runaway newlywed couple, breaking the spell of a bad prophecy that's upset the balance of good versus evil in her world, convincing kings to join her instead of a mad sorcerer, etc.

Word of the Day
Protect (transitive verb) -- to guard; to keep from harm; to guard against injury; to prevent from coming under attack; to safeguard (from Latin meaning "to cover in front")

Word in a Sentence: In the Choices fantasy trilogy, the propechy scrolls make it clear that Chariss is to protect The Master Rothahn, the highest active god of Mahriket, because she is not merely an orphaned mortal, but a well-trained wizard's apprentice who has special gifts beyond anyone's imagination.

Your turn! After last night's show at Internet Voices Radio, in which we talked quite a lot about protecting bears in celebration of Bear Awareness Week, I thought it prudent to use this simple, yet meaningful vocabulary word today. It's an easy one to be creative with. What intriguing sentences can you come up with to lodge it in our minds today?

Word of the Day
Rochest Forest (proper noun) — The forest to the immediate northwest of Arcana City, flanking the Arcanan Vale, in the epic fantasy trilogy Choices Meant for Gods

Etymology: Fantasy Author Sandy Lender created the name of this forest from the character Edward Rochester out of Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre because she wanted something that hinted of darkness and "something hidden." It's not an evil forest, but, as all forests did in medieval days, holds mystery and supernatural elements.

Word in a Sentence: When Nigel Taiman sends Charlotte Anne home to her family to protect her from his younger brother, she is killed in the Rochest Forest.

Your turn! In honor of Bear Awareness Week and the PIVR show's celebration of it tomorrow night, I'm posting a "place" that you can put a bear in. Or a shapechanger. Or a wolf. Or whatever mythical creature you'd like to invent. The idea is to be clever and creative and come up with a sentence that rocks our little blogosphere world for a while. So let's see what sentence (or paragraph) you have for today's Word of the Day.
